Before forming an LLC in Colorado, a unique business name has to be found. See how to find if the LLC name you want is available to register.
The Colorado Business Corporation registry is a database where you can find details for business entities or companies that are registered with the Colorado Secretary of State.
The registry has information available for the following type of Business entities (for both the domestic and foreign entity) :
- Limited Partnerships
- Limited Liability Companies
- Limited Liability Partnerships
The registry database is an important tool when forming an LLC as every LLC in the state must have a unique name. By using the database, you can save considerable time as LLC paperwork will be returned should a name be requested that is already registered.
To check the availability of LLC names in Colorado, follow the following steps:
Step 1 – Begin your search by going to the Colorado Secretary of State’s Website. Click on the Search Business Database under the Search and file section of Business Services. The page looks something like this:
Step 2. Enter the name of the LLC you want to register in the search field. In this example we will search for “The Pool Guy”
As you can see from the screenshot below the name The Pool Guy is an LLC that is active and in good standing in the state. This means the name can’t be registered by anyone else.
The results of a search provide information about the LLC including:
- Entity name
- ID number
- Formation date
- Type of entity
- Principal office address
- Colorado Registered Agent Information
If your search comes back with the result “The name is available”, it is likely that the name you want is available. The Secretary of State will do another search to be sure the name isn’t too similar to other names before approving the LLC filing.
