Before forming an LLC in Connecticut, a unique business name has to be found. See how to find if the LLC name you want is available to register.
The Connecticut Business Business Services Division keeps detailed information on businesses incorporated in the state in its database. You can access the database to view information on entities such as Corporations, Limited Liability Companies and Limited Liability Partnerships.
The online database search tool is important when forming an LLC as every LLC in the state must have a unique name. By using the database, you can save considerable time as LLC paperwork will be returned should a name be requested that is already registered.
Just follow the steps on how to use the search tool of the Connecticut Secretary of State.
Step 1 – To start your LLC name search, go to the Connecticut Secretary of State’s website.
Step 2. Enter the name of the LLC you want to register in the “Search by Name” field. In this example we will search for “The Lawn Company”.
As you can see from the screenshot below the name Muscle Shark is an LLC that is active and in good standing in the state. This means the name can’t be registered by anyone else.
Viewing the information of the registered business, you can find information about the LLC such as;
- Business Name
- Business ID number
- Business Address (PO Boxes are not allowed)
- Mailing Address
- Date of Registration
- Annual Report Due Date
- Business Type (Limited Liability Company, Corporation, etc)
- Business Status
- Connecticut Registered Agent information
If your search returns the message “No records found for Business Name”, then it is likely the LLC name you want to use is available.
