Before forming an LLC in Maine, a unique business name has to be found. See how to find if the LLC name you want is available to register.
The Bureau of Corporations under the Secretary of State of Maine acts as the repository for all business records and files that are registered in the state. It acts as a registrar and recorder of the following types of business entities that incorporated in the state:
- Business Corporations
- Non-Profit Corporations
- General Partnerships
- Limited Partnerships
- Limited Liability Companies
The online search tool of the Secretary of State of Maine enables you to search for business entities registered in the state absolutely free of cost. Searching the online database is important when forming an LLC as every LLC in the state must have a unique name. By using the database, you can save considerable time as LLC paperwork will be returned should a name be requested that is already registered.

Step 1. Visit the Maine Secretary of State’s website. The page that appears will look like the screenshot below.
Step 2. Enter the name of the LLC you want to register in the “Keyword from name to be searched” field. In this example we will search for “Local Muscle”
As you can see from the screenshot below the name Local Muscle is an LLC that is active and in good standing in the state. This means the name can’t be registered by anyone else.
The full record gives us additional information about the LLC including:
- Legal name
- Charter number
- Filing type (Corporation, Limited Liability Company, etc)
- Status (Dissolved, Good Standing, etc)
- Filing date
- Jurisdiction (domestic entity if Maine or foreign entity for state outside of Maine)
- Maine Registered Agent Information
From this page a certified copy of the Certificate of Legal Existence can be ordered with a $30 fee. Additionally, copies of the Articles of Incorporation (Corporation), Certificate of Formation (Limited Liability Company), Annual Report and more can be ordered as well.
In addition to searching for the name of the business entity, you can search by the charter number. While not as common, the process is similar to the steps above.
If your search comes back with the result “Found 0 entities for query”, then the LLC name is likely available. .
