Before forming an LLC in Minnesota, a unique business name has to be found. See how to find if the LLC name you want is available to register.

Any business entity that has its incorporation in Minnesota and is registered under the Minnesota Secretary of State has its details outlined in the Business corporation registry of the same. The business registry database is a convenient place where you would find many details on registered entities such as:

  • Corporations
  • Limited Companies
  • Limited Liability Companies
  • Limited Partnerships
  • Cooperatives
  • Limited Liability Partnerships
  • Non profit entities

The online database is an important tool when forming an LLC as every LLC in the state must have a unique name. By using the database, you can save considerable time as LLC paperwork will be returned should a name be requested that is already registered.

Read more on how to search for available LLC names in Minnesota.

Step 1. Visit the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website to begin a search.  The page that appears is similar to the screenshot given below.

Step 2. Select the “Business Name or File Number” button. This brings you to a page where you can enter the name of the LLC you would like to register.

Step 3. In this example, we will search to see whether the LLC name “Muscle Mowers” is available.

As it turns out there is already an LLC registered under the name Muscle Mowers so wouldn’t be available for anyone else to register.

We are able to find information about the business entity such as:

From this page you are also able to order a Certificate of Good Standing for a fee of $15.

If your result comes back with “No results match the criteria entered”, the name you want is likely available.
