Before forming an LLC in Missouri, a unique business name has to be found. See how to find if the LLC name you want is available to register.
The Missouri Business Corporation Registry comes under the Business Services divisions of the Missouri Secretary of State. The registry is an archive of all the businesses and corporate business entities that were or are registered with the Missouri SOS. The registry contains details of filing and authorization of an entity and also mentions the status of the same. The entities which form the content of the corporation registry are:
- Domestic Business Corporations
- Limited Partnerships
- Limited Liability Partnership
- Limited Company
- Limited Liability Companies
- Non Profit entities
- Foreign Entities
The Missouri Secretary of State facilitates an online business entity search tool for the users where one can get the details of any entity that is incorporated in Missouri. This search is especially important when forming a new LLC as every LLC must have a unique name. By searching the database you can save considerable time as the Secretary of State won’t allow you to register an LLC until you have an unused name.
The steps to search the LLC name database are:
Step 1. Visit the Missouri Secretary of State’s website to go to the search page which looks similar to the screenshot below.
Step 2. Enter the name of the LLC you want to use in the “Business Name” field. In this example, we will search for “Muscle Beach”
Since there is an active entity in good standing, this name isn’t available to register.
We are able to get further details about the LLC like:
- Business Name
- Type (Corporation, Limited Liability Company, etc)
- Domesticity (Domestic or Foreign Entity)
- Principal Office Address
- Charter Number
- Missouri Registered Agent Information
If you get the result “No records to display” it is likely the name you want to register is available.
