Before forming an LLC in Nebraska, a unique business name has to be found. See how to find if the LLC name you want is available to register.
The Business Services Division of the Nebraska Secretary of State files and registers Corporations, Limited Liability Companies, Limited Partnerships, Limited Companies, Limited Liability Partnership, Foreign Entities and Nonprofit Corporations. The records of the filing and registrations are recorded in the business corporation registry and are available for public access. Being able to search the registry yourself before forming an LLC may save you a lot of time since each LLC must have a unique name.
Learn how to search the registry and confirm the LLC name you want to use is available.
Step 1. Begin by visiting the Nebraska Secretary of State’s website to go to the search page for finding the registered entities in Nebraska. You will arrive at a page which looks something like the screenshot below.
Step 2. Select the radio buttons “Name Keyword Search” and “Match all Words”. In this example, we will search for “American Pools”.
As you can see from the screenshot below there is already a LLC with the name American Pools so it isn’t available to register.
From this search we are able to learn several details about the company such as:
- Business Name
- Account Number
- Status (Active, Inactive, etc)
- Principal Office Address
- Nebraska Registered Agent Information
- Nature of Business (optional field for entities to fill out)
- Entity Type (Corporation, Limited Liability Company – also domestic or foreign entity)
- Date filed
In addition, you can order documents such as the Articles of Organization, Proof of Newspaper Publication, Biennial Reports, Certificates of Good Standing and more for a small fee.
If your search comes back with the result “Your search has returned 0 results, the LLC name you want to use is likely available.
