Before forming an LLC in North Carolina, a unique business name has to be found. See how to find if the LLC name you want is available to register.

The Corporations Division of the North Carolina Secretary of State keeps a business entity database containing information for every entity based in the state. The Division records details of Corporations, Limited Liability Companies, Limited Companies, Limited Partnerships and Limited Liability Partnerships and it is through this database we can find if the name of the LLC you want is available.

Step 1. Click Secretary of State’s website to go to the Search Page for finding entities based in North Carolina. The screenshot of the Search Page is shown below.

Step 2. Search for the LLC name you want to use in the “Search For” field. In this example, we will search for “Muscle Manic”.  As seen in the screenshot below, this name is already registered by another business and is not available for you to register.

There is a lot of information provided about registered entities. Some of the available information includes:

  • Legal Name
  • Secretary of State ID
  • Annual Report Status (Shows if the entity is in Good Standing)
  • Date Formed
  • North Carolina Registered Agent Information
  • Registered Office Address
  • Mailing Address
  • Manager Information

Additionally, a Certificate of Good Standing/Existence can be purchased for a small fee.

If the name you search for does not return any results, the LLC name should be available.
