Before forming an LLC in Rhode Island, a unique business name has to be found. See how to find if the LLC name you want is available to register.

The Business Services Division of the Rhode Island Department of State has records of of registered entities in the state. These business entities include:

  • Corporations
  • Limited Liability Companies
  • Limited Liability Partnership
  • Limited Companies
  • Limited Partnership

Step 1 – Visit the Rhode Island Department of State website to go to the search page which looks similar to the screenshot below.

Step 2 – Next, we will do a search for a name for our LLC in the “Search by entity name” field. In this example we will search for “Muscle Trucking”.

As you can see in the example below, the name Muscle Trucking is already registered by another company so is not available for another LLC to register.

If your search result comes back with “No records found; try a new search using different criteria”, the name you want should be available.

There is a lot of information available for companies that are already registered.  Some of the information includes:

  • Business Name
  • ID Number
  • Entity Type (Corporation, Limited Liability Company, etc)
  • Date of Organization
  • Effective Date
  • Principal Office Address
  • Mailing Address
  • Rhode Island Registered Agent Information
  • Business Purpose
  • Board of DIrectors / Members
  • NAICS Code

Additionally you can download copies of the Annual Report, Articles of Organization (LLC), Articles of Incorporation (Corporation), Reservation of Entity Name and more.  Additionally for a small fee, the Certificate of Good Standing, Certificate of Status or Certificate of Name Change can be ordered.
