Before forming an LLC in South Carolina, a unique name has to be found. See how to find if the LLC name you want is available to register.

The business corporation registry of the South Carolina Secretary of State is engaged with keeping well maintained records of any Corporations, Limited Liability Companies, Limited Partnerships, Limited Companies and Limited Partnership.  The registry has filing details of every corporate entity that are or were incorporated in the US state of South Carolina.

If you are planning to start an LLC, you will first want to verify the name you want to use is available. To do this we will search the name of business entities in the database of the SOS. Follow with the simplified step-by-step manner to check.

Step 1 – When starting a business, a unique name has to be chosen for each registered business entity.  To search, visit the Secretary of State website The page looks similar to the screenshot below.

Step 2 – Enter the name of the LLC that you would like to use. In this example we will look up “Poop Be Gone” to see if it is available. Entering the name in the “Search by Business Name” field we see:


Here we find out Poop Be Gone is an name that is registered and in good standing. Looking at the result, we are able to find more information about the company such as:

  • Legal Entity Name Entity Type (Corporation, Limited Liability Company, etc)
  • Status (Good Standing, Dissolved, etc)
  • Domestic or Foreign Entity
  • Incorporated State (All Domestic Entities will be South Carolina)
  • Effective Date
  • South Carolina Registered Agent Information
