Before forming an LLC in Texas, a unique name has to be found. The Texas Secretary of State – Corporations Section records the names of all registered business entities in the state, whether a Corporation, Limited Liability Company, Limited Company, Limited Liability Partnership or a Limited Partnership.

Search for Available LLC Names in Texas

Step 1 – Visit the Texas Secretary of State website to go to the Search Page (see the screenshot below for reference).

How to do a Texas Business Entity Search

Step 2 – Enter the name you want to use in the Entity Name field. In this example, we will search for “Puppy Bear”. In this casethe name has already been registered and is in good standing with the state. Some searches will return forfeited, franchise tax ended or franshise tax involuntarily ended. Depending on how long the entity has not been active, the name may be able to register.

The full name search result will have information including:

  • Entity Name
  • Texas Taxpayer Number
  • Mailing Address
  • State of Formation
  • Registration Date
  • File Number
  • Texas Registered Agent Information
  • Information on the Board of Directors / Members

In addition to searching for a business entity by name, there are some lesser used search options such as by the tax ID number and file number.
