The corporate and the business division of the Secretary of State of Washington is responsible for registering Corporations, Limited Liability Companies, Limited Companies, Limited Partnerships and Limited Liability Partnerships in the state of Washington. As a result, the SOS developed the Corporations and Charities Filing System which is a database with the records of registered businesses based in Washington.

If you are researching the name you want to use for your Washington LLC is available, you have come to the right place. The online search tool facilitated by the Secretary of State of Washington lets you search the database for any business entity you want.

Search by Business Name

Step 1 – Visit the Washington Secretary of State website to search for registered business entities. The search page looks something like the screenshot below.

Step 2 – Type in the name you are searching for in the Business Name field. In this example we will do a search for “Ninja Bears“.

In this example, the name Ninja Bears is in use. The key to look at is whether the business status is Active. If it comes back as Administratively Dissolved, Delinquent, or Inactive it may be available to register.

In this screen there is information about the business including;

  • Business Name
  • Business Type
  • Principal Office Street Address
  • Formation Date
  • What the Business Does
  • UBI number
  • Active or Inactive status (Good Standing results)
  • Mailing Address
  • Washington Registered Agent information
  • Governors (members of the LLC

Additionally, from this page you can download filed documents such as the Annual Report, Articles of Incorporation (Corporation), Articles of Organization (Limited Liability Company), etc

If the result comes back with “No Value Found” it likely means the name you want to use is available.

Search by UBI

A less often used search is through the UBI, (unified business identifier) which is a number assigned by the Secretary of State, you can search for that entity directly.
