Like most states, the Alabama Secretary of State offers a way for the general public to search for any type of registered entity, including corporations, limited liability companies (LLC), limited partnerships (LP), limited liability partnerships (LLP), limited liability limited partnerships (LLLP), and professional associations. You can use the Alabama business entity search based on the entity’s name, number, officer, registered agent, incorporator name, formation date, and/or ID. Upon receiving the results of your search, you can view all publicly available information about the entity you selected.

Search by name

You must first navigate to the Secretary of State’s Alabama Business Entity Search website. You only need to enter the name of the entity you’re searching for. However, you may refine your search by entering the entity type, place of formation, principal address city, and business status.

After entering the name and whatever other information you wish to use in your search, click the Search button to proceed. A list of matching business entity records will appear on the next page, showing the name, entity ID number (six digits in an xxx – xxx format), city, type, and status with the Alabama Secretary of State. Click on the entity ID in the blue text to get the full information about the entity.

On the next page, the Alabama business entity search will display the following information regarding the business entity:

  • ID number
  • Business entity type
  • Principal address
  • Mailing address
  • Current status
  • Place of formation
  • Formation date
  • Registered agent name, mailing address, and street address
  • Nature of business
  • Capital authorized and paid in (if applicable)
  • Incorporator/organizer name, street address, and mailing address
  • Formation documents

Search by business entity number

Go to the Alabama Secretary of State Business Search webpage and enter the six-digit entity number in an xxx-xxx format. There’s no option for refining your search when searching for an entity using this method. Once you enter the information, click the Search button to proceed.

On the following page, you’ll be able to view all relevant publicly available information regarding the entity, including its company name, registered agent name, contact details, and much more.

Search by agent, officer, or incorporator name

In the business name search tool, enter the name of the individual connected to the business you’d like to look up in a “last name, first name” format. You may choose to refine your search by entering the county in which the business was formed.

On the next page, you can view the matching results for all the entities the person serves in the state, in addition to the entity ID, entity name, and the person’s position within the company. Click on the entity ID in the blue text to get its detailed information.

On the final page, you can view the business details, as outlined above in the “Search by Name” section.

Search by month and year

You can also search business entities based on when they were formed. Go to the Alabama Business Search website and enter the month and year the entity was created with the Secretary of State. Click the Search button to view the results page.

The next page will show the search results of entities formed in that month and year in alphabetical order. Click on the entity name or ID to get the full information about the business.

On the next page, you can view all relevant public information regarding the entity.

Search by date

Begin your search of Alabama businesses by entering the specific date the entity was formed into the state website. You can refine your search options by including the county where the business was formed. Click the Search button to begin your search of the Alabama Secretary of State business database.

The results will appear in alphabetical format. You can click the links for the business name or ID number for more info about the Alabama business entity.

The resulting page will provide the same details about the Alabama company that we outlined above in the “Search by Name” section.

Search by reservation

Go to the Alabama Business Search website and enter the business reservation number, which can be found in the bottom-left corner of the company’s reservation ID certificate.

After entering the reservation ID, you’ll have access to all relevant public info about the Alabama business.
