Before forming an LLC in Illinois, a unique business name has to be found. See how to find if the LLC name you want is available to register.
The Secretary of State of Illinois maintains one of the country’s largest databases which contain information on hundreds of thousands of business entities, including Corporations and Limited Liability Companies (LLCs).
The business database also has information regarding the following entities:
- Not-for-Profit Corporations
- Limited Partnerships
- Limited Companies
- Limited liability Companies
To do your search for finding available LLC names in Illinois, you can use the online database search tool. This search tool is important when forming an LLC as every LLC in the state must have a unique name. By using the database, you can save considerable time as LLC paperwork will be returned should a name be requested that is already registered.
To make your search easier, we have created an easy-to-follow guide for you below.
Step 1 – Visit the Illinois Secretary of State’s website (it will look like the screenshot below). Select the LLC button for “Type of Search” and click continue.
Step 2 – Enter the name of the LLC you want to register. In this example, we will search for “Muscle Health”
Step 3 – As you can see from the screenshot below the name Muscle Health is an LLC that is active and in good standing in the state. This means the name can’t be registered by anyone else.
Since this is a registered entity, we are able to find information including”
- Legal Name
- Entity Type (Corporation, Limited Liability Company, etc)
- Illinois Registered Agent Information
- Annual Report Filing Date
- File Number
- State of Formation (If the result is Illinois, it is a domestic entity, while an out-of-state result is a foreign entity)
- Officer Information
Here you can also request a certificate of good standing.
