Before forming an LLC in Indiana, a unique business name has to be found. See how to find if the LLC name you want is available to register.
The Business Services Division of the Indiana Secretary of State administers all business-related responsibilities and duties in the state. The Division maintains the records and files of every business entity that has been registered in the state. It stores information of Corporations, Limited Liability Companies, Limited Partnerships, Limited Companies and Limited Liability Partnerships.
The INBiz business entity database tool is important when forming an LLC as every LLC in the state must have a unique name. By using the database, you can save considerable time as LLC paperwork will be returned should a name be requested that is already registered.
Below is our simplified guideline for using the INBiz search tool.
Step 1. Go to the INBIZ Search Page (it will look like the screenshot below).
Step 2. Next, you will want to enter the name of the LLC you want to register in the “Business Name” field. In this example, we will search for “Dumb Muscle”.
As you can see from the screenshot below the name Dumb Muscle is an LLC that is active and in good standing in the state. This means the name can’t be registered by anyone else.
You are able to find information about the LLC including:
- Business name
- Entity type
- Creation date
- Principal office address
- Business status
- Names and addresses of members
- Indiana Registered Agent information
You can also view the business entity’s filing and name history, as well as request for certified copies of its documents such as the Articles of Organization / Articles of Incorporation.
If you search results comes back with the message “No data found”, it is likely the LLC name you want to use is available.
