Before forming an LLC in Oregon, a unique business name has to be found. See how to find if the LLC name you want is available to register.

The Corporate Division of the Oregon Secretary of State is responsible for a number of actions related to the incorporating of business entities in the state. The corporation registry of the Oregon SOS acts as a recorder of all those Business Entities that are or once were headquartered in Oregon. The registry contains filing and authorization details of the companies based in the state. It contains information of the following types of corporate entities in the state:

  • Corporations
  • Limited Liability Companies
  • Limited Companies
  • Limited partnerships
  • Limited Liability Partnerships

The Secretary of State of Oregon business registry provides a database to search existing LLCs in the state. The ability to search is important because each LLC must have a unique name in Oregon. See how to search with the steps below. s

Step 1. Visit the Oregon Secretary of State’s website to go to the search page. You will come across a webpage which looks something like this.

Step 2. In the “Business Name Search” field enter the name of the business you want to register. In this example, we will search for “The Muscle Train”.

In this example, there is already an LLC that registered that name. We are able to find out information about that business including:

  • Registry Number
  • Entity Type
  • Entity Status (Active, Good Standing, Inactive, etc.)
  • Registration Date
  • Entity Name
  • Principal Office Address
  • Oregon Registered Agent Information
  • Board of Director / Officer / Member / Business Owners Information

If the search comes back with the result “Your search returned no business entity names”, the name you want to use is probably available.
